Smoke rises from funeral pyres and mingles with the
pollution and burning garbage of Nepal's largest city. Nearly all of the city’s deceased are cremated at Pashupatinath Temple before being swept along the Bagmati River towards the Ganges.
One of the holiest sites in Hinduism, many elderly Hindus spend the last weeks of their lives at the temple believing that if they die there, they will be reincarnated as human regardless of their Karma.
The temple is also an attraction for locals and tourists, many of whom spend hours watching the funerals of strangers from the opposite bank of the Bagmati River.
